Shree: proportion to space
Shree: proportion to space
The idea of proportion has got a
very deep meaning. Is it only a physical attribute for a constructed or an
imagined space or is it more than that? Space (or a form) comes from many
inspirations or motivations and to know what that meaning is; formal analysis
of space is not sufficient. Perhaps that is the meaning of ‘analysis’ – taking
one to the realm of imagination and speculation of course.
Space for humans needs to be
constructed – the primordial need of ‘belongng’ or the urge to remain connected
with existence, even this – the word ‘existence’ is very much deep rooted that
it can rarely be contained in words.
The above intent then takes
various processes of imagination, meaning and construction to create a physical
space in a physical domain of space-time environment. And perhaps this may have
been referred as Volume Zero by Ar. Louis Kahn – where consciousness only is
and that triggers intent and expression.
Thus, the response of proportion
– dimensions, is to ‘scale’ the given space-time phenomenon that it starts to
become related to human needs. A nomadic ‘tent’ as a space talks a lot about
vastness of physical space and also about imagination to relate to that
vastness. How do I ‘relate’ to this vastness – that seems to be one of the
questions that architecture of the tent seems to suggest?
The question, if one takes it
more deeper, is in any existential situation, how do I relate to space-time?
This question is valid for any space and time. If we come from consciousness,
how on earth am I suppose to belong ‘here’? This act of belonging is probably what triggers architecture.
