Memory and what it should mean
There are many articles written
previously about aspects of memory and their consequent effects on ‘us’ as
phenomena.
Probably, as I move through my
life, more aspects would get revealed/ discovered and more articles on memory
may get generated. Let’s contrast two types of memories that we create for ourselves:
The first one, is what I refer to
as ‘photogenic’ memory. Many people recollect some moment in their lives as a ‘photo’.
If we ask them about a particular moment in their lives – they would describe
that moment in terms of colours, textures, people, forms, and what they were
doing at that point of time. In other words, they are stating the “what” of the
moment – the physicality of the moment of existence (physicality of Time and
Place). IF we poke them further, they seem to falter in trying to recollect
feelings, experiences, intentions or why they found that moment memorable! This
is not a good situation, for it just illustrates that nothing seem to leave any
impression on people – good or bad. It also points out that people seem lost
and are not present in the moment. Just imagine if people remain jumbled up in
their thoughts and they can’t figure out what they recollect - is it real or fictional or imagination of
the mind?! Careful here!...
Another kind of memory is of a
deep impression of the moment on you. Typically, such memories take you to the ‘what’
do you recall, ‘how’ is it recalled and ‘why’ do you think it should be
recalled? Here, we move from the dimension of physicality of the moment to
perceptions and intentions. We experience feelings, concerns, and processes. In
other words, we recall our own involvement with the moment. The involvement
kindles your imagination and it hints at the aspect of value that you cherish
as a human being. A family photo shown to you may ignite very touching stories of
your relationships with family members and not just that instant, but many
different episodes that you have now linked with the family photo placed in
front of you.
Thus, memory should mean
imagination (perception and conception). It should further mean your
involvement – in terms of values, processes, actions and relationships with
people and incidences.
Are we doing this today?
