Desire
There is no dilemma at all. Whatever we think, we reinforce. The greatest of miracles of existence is the nature of thought leading to perception of situation for us and the situation itself. So the external reality can be shaped and perceived with respect to the internal reality. It is obvious that external signals when perceived create internal mind – ripples. However, the mind itself can also create its own ripples irrespective of any external stimuli.
As is said preciously, situation is what we perceive or mentally construct. This construction is dependent on the phenomenon of space-force-matter (as a human being). The construction of situation is inevitable, since we have chosen to identify with motion (that creates fear or attachment or memory). There is no “we” here – it is just motion of a particular kind or a state of vibration that one refers to as a human being that creates a universe for this state of existence. I exist as a human being, so I see the universe the way it is – a bundle of force, matter at various scales having differing attributes that I perceive with different names and forms. I perceive these elements as different and interconnected since that is what my nature of perception is. And then I fight or try in vain to control these things.
The philosophical fact behind this is that the more one perceives oneself as an island, the more is the velocity of thoughts, more is the aggression, more is the ego and more is the urge to control and more is the identification with thought or the senses. because all desires essentially mean responding to change. Change and our identification with it mean fear and insecurity thus this urge to control. In any manifestation the twin forces of life (expansion) and death (contraction) exist. Existence is a contradiction of sorts and it keeps changing – are we supposed to be a slave for this changing scenario? Rather existence is perceived because there is apparent difference or motion or vibration or fluidity or contradiction. That is the nature of existence (manifestation).
Desire cannot be quenched by fulfilling desire. Finding out variables to control cause and effect is a vicious cycle. What are we accomplishing with more perfection, more production, more speed and more control? Nothing. If the change exceeds beyond a point of even perceiving the stable character of self, then we are in deep trouble since we may find living completely irrelevant! A little bit of contradiction, some quantity of difference, some change, some stability, some motion is required for existence to be felt. Are we making ourselves irrelevant by speeding up motion? The genie in the bottle is a symbolic representation of instant fulfillment of desire - it doesn’t satisfy anything! Similarly the modern gynie in the form of AI does not satisfy anything! How can we even expect any external form of nourishment to nourish the want of our soul? The soul is eternal and we are making the mistake of feeding the soul with tendencies that are of “motion” – which is a mismatch! What tendency one feeds oneself with, so does one become. If one wants to experience soul, then those are the signals of perception one needs to generate. The mistake is to consider motion (mind and body so real that the memory of “soul” is lost).
It is said that this attitude can be corrected by slowing down. This means either to slow each wave of the mind (change), to not cling to any known variable (since variable is mind itself), to expand the mind beyond body and include everything, to expand to such an extent and perceive such scales of phenomena that do not seem to change, to work + love + think for the “sake” of these dimensions and NOT for any situation. So one can perceive a state of blissfulness even in the midst of an apparent motion. Motion is “apparent” and NOT real. The mistake is to consider “One” as appearing as “many”. All things that are seen or heard or touched or perceived are reflecting that stable “One”. This also dissolves the universe for us and the little ‘I’ (or the mind-body) becomes irrelevant (but herein the state is of transcendence and not rejection).
Outwardly the quality of rejection and transcendence may seem the same but they are poles apart. Rejection is highly negative and an intellectual pursuit alone. Transcendence involves a compassionate approach and a complete utilization of dimension of human being.
