Shree: Education

031122: Shree: Education

History shows that things change and nothing remains constant as motion - especially tendencies. Climate, geography are aspects that may not change suddenly, as much as our perceptions do. All history is the struggle of opposing forces  - namely of greed (be that individual or collective) verses the larger good (be that individual or collective).

The purpose of ancient education in India (101FM Vividh Bharathi) seems to acknowledge the dimension of perception having these forces at hand and hence using pedagogy as a tool to enhance the good qualities. Tendencies were framed under four pillars of senses, mind, existence and ego. This is an acknowledgement of nature of perception and which components inform this phenomenon. It is also an acknowledgment that under these forces, alignment is required to finally reach highest potential of Being. From this ideas of family, community, livelihood were articulated. From this the systems of Guru-Shishya and four society divisions were formed to reinforce above intent.

Above values or concerns of existence is seen in all fields and also in architecture. Architecture may be seen to fracture a society or to connect with universal values - intents, programs, processes and products can be seen from perspective of division or inclusion or connection.

Thus the purpose of architecture is defined from purpose of existence - which is to become universal. The need now is to find a contemporary expression of above intent of ancient education system of India.

What seems interesting that the forces of perception cannot be ignored - they are present in us and they pull us in all directions - we may become a coward or a brave hero. Existence is about realizing what one ought to prefer. Some perceptions are better than others since the good perceptions dissolve or transcend all. Also, what may get rejected by society may come back and be endorsed again in a new flavour after some time. So it is all motion - sometimes rejecting, sometimes embracing and so on.

Hari Om.
