Idea and Heritage
This takes guts to digest, since
it places complete responsibility on ‘you’ – that all we ‘see’ and all we
perceive and all that we create is our imagination/ idea. In other words, idea
is a meaning that we keep defining for our existence. Or existence can’t be
neutral – it will remain forever colored by our ideas. So, anything that is
generated by our thoughts or anything that gets resulted from our thoughts –
whatever – is an idea. Hence feelings, experiences, emotions, intellect – all are
thoughts/ imaginations. I will keep these terms (thoughts/ imaginations/ ideas/
perceptions/ conceptions) interchanging and I believe that they can be easily
interchanged and many times they mean one and the same. They essentially mean
our own imaginations generated by our applied instrument – thoughts! How you
therefore choose to think, is going to create a particular kind of imagination
and therefore an experience of life. Why you think - as a phenomenon – can’t be answered I
guess. It is a default power given to you. Although seers talk of our tendency
of bondage to body and mind (because of fear/ existence), we therefore continue
to think. This realization is not at all easy to digest, let alone control it
for our own good!
To think, is to take you to
action (or a process) and is going to create a form (manifest). Hence, there is
a link between the intangible and the tangible. The first attachment or a
relationship that happens in space is of the ‘thought’ itself. As it builds a
chain of thoughts and proceeds to action (or a process of doing), more attachments
happen and finally, we get attached to the form/ product when we ‘see’ the
form. Hence, the ‘form’ is a container of our ideas/ thoughts/ beliefs. The
form is a reminder (or an expression) of numerous steps taken before its birth.
Therefore, changes in external form without our consent becomes annoying or
painful. The form remains as it is so long as our association with it (of idea
+ process) remains intact. The moment our thoughts change, we perceive the same
form differently – we are forced to change the form (or adapt/ transform/
reinvent etc). The above tendency is present in each one of us - and we
exercise it individually or collectively. All built environment and all arts
and crafts are a reflection of this.
Since we change as human beings –
we keep creating new forms of expressions and we keep
decoding/recycling/reinventing/adapting previous forms of expressions. Nothing
remains static. If we agree with this tendency, then we can accept changes as a
natural phenomenon of life and thus, may choose to concentrate more on ideas
and processes leading to manifestations. Ideas of ‘control’ can be seen much
better and the validity of laws or rules can get questioned at a more profound
depth.
The need to define heritage and
take appropriate steps to conserve something and the need to create something
appropriate are based on above fundamental tendencies of existence.
