Shree: Public
Shree: Public
In our college, no one seems to
discuss anything when one works “at his/her desk”. The personal space actually
was meant to be an extension of the public space but NOT compartmentalized or
kept disconnected from the public space such as disconnected from corridirs,
terraces, stairs, studios, walkways and so on. Anyway that is how it is.
However some of the more fruitful
converations happened when I was walking on the stairs or standing on the
corridor and a chance conversation with a fellow faculty member was struck on
topics ranging from relations, challenges in life, old age homes, competitions,
students’ attitudes and so on. This means that these concerns probably get
voiced out in public spaces or where no one seems to be pressurized about
evaluations or judgments!
And then I realized that because
the purpose is so much concentrated in private areas that the public dimension
is rendered “purposeless”; then it is also “possible” to view this purposeless
space as something where “anything is allowed to take place without any
judgment or evaluation!”.
Rather than shunning public
spaces, it may be quite possible to be in a public space and just do
anything - it may be the greatest
flexible space one has inherited, who knows?!
This philosophically means, that
any space or activity where the feeling of evaluation is not present
essentially takes on a public/ universal dimension!
