What is comfort? It
is a sense of being. This sense is linked with various factors of vibrations
and forces and forms and is also informed by the built environment, how we
meet, what we do (learn) and what we feel within the built environment. Hence comfort
is a mood. Comfort is not material although material may be an approach
to take one to the experience of being comfortable. Architecturally then, the
ideas of scale and proportions, movements, geometry, senses generate an experience
of a mood where architecture may take a backseat but the experience maybe
profound.
What can such
architecture be like? Probably imbued with a lot of shade, cover, transitions,
people, loitering, easy to explore, pausing at places, focusing, being in one’s
space and being together, interacting, having a favorable breeze, rough
textures, somber colours, natural materials, silent light, mesmerizing evening
light, moon and the stars, the morning dew, birds….
One is being made
naturally and subtly aware of such experiences, perhaps unknowingly, at times
consciously, at times accidently.
Perhaps this is the
kind of architecture to reckon – the kind which brings one ‘home’ again.
